The tradition of painting porch ceilings light greenish-blue is from the descendants of enslaved African people, the Gullah Geechee, in the coastal South like FL, GA and SC who used to paint this color on porches, shutters and windows to keep away "haints" (spirits) because they believed haints couldn't cross over a body of water so this color represented the water.
